Food Dyes are Everywhere~Are You Concerned?

I have been reading labels for years now, but sometimes things can be hidden, and other times, they are right in plain sight. Here is an excerpt from an article by Josh Davis, published by Houston Methodist. You can read the full article at the bottom of this page.

From juice to jelly beans, baby food to baking decorations, synthetic food dyes are everywhere. These dyes provide vibrant colors that make foods more visually appealing. But at what cost? While these colors may be enticing, many synthetic dyes pose significant health risks.

Among the most concerning is Red Dye No. 3.

Over 30 years ago, the FDA banned its use in cosmetics after studies revealed that high doses of the dye caused cancer in lab animals. Yet, despite this concerning research and pressure from public health advocates, the FDA has never extended the ban to food products, allowing them to remain in a wide range of daily consumption by adults and children alike.

It’s not just Red Dye No. 3 that raises alarms.

Other synthetic dyes, like Yellow No. 5 and Blue No. 1, have been linked to behavioral issues in children, allergies, and potential carcinogenic effects. European countries have taken stricter action, banning or requiring warning labels on foods containing certain synthetic dyes. However, in the U.S., these dyes are still widely used, particularly in highly processed foods, candies, and snacks marketed toward children.

For parents, it’s crucial to stay informed and take extra care when selecting food products.

Opting for foods with natural coloring or no added dyes can reduce exposure to these potentially harmful ingredients. Choosing whole, unprocessed foods is another powerful way to limit the intake of artificial additives that may affect health, behavior, and overall well-being.

So, if you have not been reading labels, now is an excellent time to start! The article below has more, including foods that contain Red Dye No. 3. click the yellow button.
