Good Question~Is Self Care Selfish or Necessary? Growing up I used to think that taking time for myself was selfish. After all, I had so much to do…family to take care of, clothes to wash, dishes to do, errands to run, etc. Where was the time for me?

Ok, I did take a few minutes everyday for myself when I escaped to the bathroom. Remember those days? Still, it was like everyone knew where mom was even in those few brief moments. Crazy right?

Well, now I am in my 60’s and have learned a few things over these last decades I’d like to share with you!

First of all, taking time~self care for yourself is not selfish. It is necessary. Scripture dictates this as well. Luke 5:16 “But He would withdraw to desolate places and pray.” Exodus 18:18-19 “But Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. Surely you and these people with you will wear yourselves out, because the task is too heavy for you. You cannot handle it alone.” Ephesians 5:29 “For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church.” 

Here are some practical ways to start taking some time for yourself!

  • Take a break from social media
  • Walk outside in the sunshine or rain
  • Find a quiet place to meditate and breathe in the sights and smells around you
  • Do some easy stretching or yoga
  • Take a long hot bubble bath
  • Read a chapter in a good book
  • Take a nap
  • Listen to music 
  • Journal your thoughts
  • Snuggle with your pet

Of course one of my favorites is to sip on a good cup of hot tea while listening to music. 

Hopefully, as you step into your day, you will remember that you are special. You are worth the extra minutes you give yourself.
