Is Watermelon Just Sugar and Water?

Despite popular opinion that you only receive water and sugar when consuming watermelon, there are many other benefits. Did you know?

Watermelon has been long associated with a reduced risk of many lifestyle-related health conditions.

Many studies according to Medical News Today, state that consumption of plant foods like watermelon decreases the risk of obesity and overall mortality, diabetes, and heart disease.

Watermelon has been beneficial in weight loss and energy levels.

Watermelon promotes a healthy complexion and healthy hair.

I would state that right there, those are some excellent reasons to consume watermelon!

However, we are rounding the end of the season, so we need to consume and enjoy this excellent fruit choice while the time remains. Isn’t this the cutest idea for a way to get your children or grandchildren to eat fruit? I saw this on facebook and cropped the photo. I wish I knew where I had seen this to give credit to the proper person, but since it was on social media, I know I can share.

Watermelon contains some great nutrition as well:

Watermelon contains thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, choline, lycopene, and betaine.

According to the National Watermelon Promotion Board, watermelon contains more lycopene than any other fruit or vegetable.

Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant with many health benefits, including sun protection, improved heart health and a lower risk of certain types of cancer. Though it can be found as a supplement, it may be most effective when consumed from lycopene-rich foods like tomatoes and other red or pink fruits.
I would love to hear your suggestions on some of your favorite ways to serve this delicious fruit!
